Run a Productive Business … from your Car-Office
The way we do business has changed dramatically over the
past 10 years. More products and services are now being offered outside
traditional premises. You no longer have to go to a bank to complete your
transactions or home loan applications. Insurance brokers visit your home or
office; retailers deliver products directly to your home. This change in
distribution methodology has meant many of us now run a car-office.

Want to learn a life-saving
skill in just 10 seconds????
A STROKE - A true story
Susie is recuperating at an incredible pace for someone with a massive
stroke, all because Sherry saw Susie stumble. She asked Susie the 3
questions, so simple, this literally saved Susie's life. Some angel sent it
to Sherry and she did just what it said to do. Susie failed all three so 911
was called. Even though she had normal blood pressure readings and it did
not appear to be a stroke as she could converse to some extent with the
Paramedics, they took her to the hospital right away.
Thank God for the sense to remember the 3 steps!
Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the
lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage
when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors
say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
- Ask the individual to SMILE.
- Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
- Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE.
If he/she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 911 immediately and
describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
After discovering that a group of nonmedical volunteers could identify
facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the
general public to learn the three questions. They presented their
conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last
February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and
treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people,
you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Sales and Marketing Institute of New Zealand
Recognise your outstanding people with the Awards!
Congratulations, it's wonderful to see the
participation by members attending events, and also making sure those award
entry forms get given out to likely participants. Now is the most important
bit - you have to drive entries into the awards. Remember, the close off
date is 20th June, so you've got to get those entries in from yourself, from
your clients, from your customer base, encouraging people to enter so that
our judges have an enjoyable task choosing the best people that our industry
can represent. All sales and marketing professionals are invited to enter,
you do not have to be members of our institute.
Do your bit - enter now, and encourage others!
I look forward to seeing you at the awards ceremony
on 15th July (Friday) at The Spencer on Byron Hotel in Takapuna, where we
will show how good our profession is at recognising success. Book yourself
into this event, there's limited seating and tables.
Have you listened to the American Marketing
Association Radio Network yet? If you're a member, you will have received
email details of how to log on to tune into some of the finest brains from
around the world talking about sales and marketing strategies, another
benefit of membership of our Institute.
If you subscribe to the theory that the New Zealand
economy is tightening up, then you better make sure you attend one of our
events or do some networking with some of our members to pick up the right
ideas for making sure that your skills, your profession, and your business
are maximising the opportunities in the economy. Remember, if you
participate you will be stimulated to close deals!
And we encourage you to recognise Women in Business
with the 'Her Business' Businesswoman of the Year Awards Ceremony, on this
Friday night, 10th June (see below for details).
I look forward to seeing you at the next event!
Regards, Richard P. Gee, President

An Eight-Minute Test To Screen New Clients
By Rob Levinson
You've probably heard of speed dating, a service
that introduces singles to a room full of potentially suitable companions,
by allowing pairs exactly eight minutes (or as few as three) for
conversation... and the chance to quickly size up chemistry. The best part
is the "instant-out clause" -- every eight minutes a bell rings and
participants switch partners so no time is wasted on obvious mismatches.
I've started to do the equivalent when I meet prospects: sizing them up on
whether they'll be great clients or pains in the neck in about eight
minutes. I follow a script that forces the prospect to reveal his or her
understanding of marketing (my consulting specialty), attitudes about
working with consultants, approach to work and ability to communicate. If I
think we're compatible, I ask, "How much of a marketing investment are you
prepared to make?" This answer separates the serious client from the rest
and becomes the platform for the remainder of our conversation.

Sales and Marketing Institute of New Zealand
E-news April 2005
Congratulations to all those people who have been attending our events
and bringing along their business associates, and enjoying the beginning of
the year stimulation.
Participation as a member of the institute is vital, particularly to all the
rest of the members, and there are a number of ways in which you can assist
your membership and your institute in the coming months.
Participate in supporting the coming Sales & Marketing Awards, by
publicising them to your clients and customers, internally within your
organisation, and to your suppliers. Also by entering yourself, or
encouraging other people around you to enter.
You can also participate by sponsorship of either the Awards, or
participating in a sponsorship contribution to our institute, or even
becoming a strategic partner by buying groups of tables that can be used
over the year. With all of these, you will get more than your perceived
return.

Subject: special book for Q training
by Bob Legrand
Hello,
After 20 years of quality experience I wrote a book on Quality, Testing and
Organization, entitled “Q-Course Quality & Organization? All the relevant
Quality Standards are presented in the book, therefore the book is great for
Quality education. The book is ISO9001, TMap, ISEB, RUP, TQM, CMM/TMM, ITIL,
Prince2 etc combined with efficiency and a lot of extras, tricks and
management models. It is the Q-Course. The book is available on http://www.lulu.com/content/70334.
See also www.q-course.com. The book is now being translated into German by
the German company Edditrex.
There is special attention for an integrated testing strategy (from specs to
scripts) that will save you a lot of testing time and money. It guarantees
an optimal coverage combined with a minimum amount of work.
Quality is also put in a broad perspective. The PowerPoint presentation that
is added on the Lulu site will give you an impression. The management models
that are presented get to the essence of every business process. They can be
used for a quick and effective evaluation of your or any other organization.
Could you please forward this to the Quality people in your organization? It
is quite a business opportunity. You only have to read the book.
Kind regards
Q-Course

Feeling Good About Yourself
How your employees feel about themselves will effect how they communication
with your customers. If your employees do not feel good about
themselves and have self-image and self-concept
problems it will be reflected on the job.
Most executives are able to pick themselves up from problems and
adversities. Strong people are able to visualize success and pat
themselves on the back when they do a great job.
Unfortunately, many employees do not have these
skills.
It only takes a few seconds for a customer to know if one of your employees
cares about them. It doesn't matter if the contact is in person, or
by phone, email, letter or fax.

Law of Control
You feel good/positive about yourself to the degree to
which
you are in control of your own life. You feel negative
about
yourself to the degree to which your feel you are not in
control.
***************************************************************************************
Revamp your thinking.
During this past week there's two major events in New
Zealand that
signify times of ending of one season and the beginning
of another.
So ...for you it's a great time to finish with the old
and start afresh
with the new. Easter is a time or resurrecting yourself
to the person
you want to be, a time for you to refocus on your dreams
and goals.
The 31st March is the end of the financial year and
again a time for
you to assess where your finances are going...are you on
track...
what changes do you need to make?
***************************************************************************************
Sir Peter Blake and I shared the same passion - the
sea.
The late great Sir Peter Blake gave me permission to
use two of his
famous quotes in my first book - Sailing a different
course.
The first one I use at the beginning of my book:
You can make any dream real enough if you work away at it
long
enough
One of my many dreams was to have an office with a sea
view. It seem
pretty far fetched considering my current situation a few
years ago.
However, being open to what comes your way and following
the principles
I teach with my Success Coaching, it's finally happened.
AND. better
than I would have thought.
On hot sunny days I've been working in my new office
location. I take my
laptop, place it on the coffee table on the clifftop and
sit working with a
view of Rangitoto stretched in front of me, in amongst
the pohutukawa
branches that grow up from the cliff and am surrounded by
the birds
that fly along the cliff face gliding in the thermals.
The hardest thing is
to focus on the screen, when I've got wind shifts, boats,
and all the
glorious things to watch...but I do.
Sir Peter's second quote I use at the end my book was:
If it wasn't difficult it wouldn't be worth doing.
And...achieving that dream has been very challenging
at times...but worth
the blood, sweat and tears, but..I've still got loads
more dreams to achieve...
Now I'm sure you have to, so ... here's some help for
you.

One Bite At A Time
I'm sure you've heard the question, "How do you eat an
elephant?" When I first heard this question, I was perplexed as to how such
a massive serving of animal could be completely finished. After considering
the possibilities, and discovering no solution, my response was, "How?" The
answer, "One bite at a time.", made complete sense. How could something so
large, be consumed in one bite?
When
considering large projects or major life plans/challenges, keep the answer
to that question in mind. There is an add-on to this answer. When
considering a large project, a major goal, or any other undertaking, it's
important to not allow the size of the thing to overwhelm you. Prioritize.
Prioritizing is a common denominator among those who are successful. As
Stephen Covey has written, we need to take, "First Things First". Here
are some ideas for setting priorities:
-
Break down large projects,
goals, or tasks into smaller bites/tasks.
-
Make a list of what needs to
be done.
-
Prioritize your list by
using a rating system: A=Urgent & Important, B=Important, & C=Not
Important

Loyalty for Life
From Hell to Heaven in 60 Seconds or less
My book on service recovery, Loyal for Life, is in final production. In
addition, we are writing a complete training program on service
recovery. This program will help you train your staff to develop awesome
service
recovery skills.
Every organization, sometime during the week, is going to make a major
mistake. To say 'I'm sorry' is nice, but often this will not solve
the problem and save the customer.
The magic is when an employee makes an empowered decision that saves the
customer. Many times this empowered decision is to give something
away of value. This is how you go from hell to
heaven in 60 seconds or less.

Relationships matter !
BY: Denis Orme VirtualCEO
www.leader-success.com
To recap from the last edition of Leading Ways: In recent research it was
found that 70% of all relationships either fail outright or only achieve
their initial goals - without the parties ever becoming long-term business
partners.
In a sentence, the relationship never gets beyond the "you can" to a
position of "together we will." Relationships matter!
The logical building blocks in establishing relationships are:
Evaluation and Selection
Negotiation
Post deal - VRE

Although New Zealand has the highest women’s
entrepreneurship rate in developed world, the
entrepreneurial gender gap is still severe despite improvements.
Despite an improvement over 2003, New Zealand women
suffer a 30 percent deficit compared to the numbers of male entrepreneurs,
according to a cross-national study of 34 countries. The Global
Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report on women’s entrepreneurial activity
was released today by The Center for Women’s Leadership at Babson College
(USA) and Unitec New Zealand’s GEM project.
Unitec is the New Zealand partner of the GEM
consortium and it assisted the Center for Women’s Leadership in the study.
The GEM 2004 Report on Women and Entrepreneurship provides an in-depth
global look at women’s entrepreneurship and highlights the important role
that women play in developing and developed economies.

Creativity and Innovation,
As a leader, manager or entrepreneur, your prosperity depends on your
commitment to creativity and innovation. Competitive advantage in all areas
is shifting to your ability to generate new useful product ideas. If you do
not innovate, you could fall behind your competitors. However, the key
challenge is, only one in 3000-5000 ideas goes on to be a product (either
goods or services) while others wither away. Can this uncertain science be
demystified?
This semi-monthly newsletter by Kore Kalibre, titled
Creativity
and Innovation,
is designed to provoke thought on novel products. How can you generate ideas
that have higher probability of success? If you have an existing line of
products, how can you add complementary products? This newsletter has
answers to key questions, practical ideas and much more.

A Time For
Renewal
Occassionally, it is
important to step away from your daily routine. If we continue to keep our
nose to the grindstone without taking a break, we may eventually fall asleep
at the wheel. That's when we miss important details, make mistakes, are
unable to focus, feel out-of-sorts, or know something isn't right, but can
but our finger on what the problem might be. These are all indications of a
need to review, renew, and revive. Take some time to climb a mountain, and
look at your life from a different perspective. Review where you are, allow
time for your body and your senses to renew themselves, and you will return
to your daily life feeling revived. Here are some ideas for beginning your
renewal:

Subject: CHRISTMAS GIFTS ARTICLE - XTRA HOME PAGE
Hi Richard,
I logged onto your recent article regarding Christmas Gifts - or Bribes??
One of the main points that you may of overlooked in your Pro's & Con's of
Gifting or Saying "Thank You" to your top customers...is in fact probably
the most important, the cheapest and the most effective as a starting point
to communicate..
That is - Sending a "Christmas Card" ....Branded of course.
or a simple "Thank You" card, which always goes down well too!
There is always a decision process we all go through, just simply deciding
on what card you want, what you want to say, and how you want to say it? But
at least it communicates the first message - That is, They have not been
forgotten!
You don't need to guess what I do, but I just thought it was worthy of a
mention - should you be writing another article!!
If you need any information on the card market to be included, just let me
know - you may find it quite interesting?
As for yourself, if you would like a few cards for Geewiz, email me back and
I'll show you the best range of NZ made cards.
"Good article by the way!"
All the best.
Richard Collins.

Top 5 Tips for Successful Search Engine Marketing.
If you are new to the Search category, you're probably familiar with the term "Search Engine Optimization" (SEO) and have seen or heard the term "Search Engine Marketing" (SEM), but are not exactly sure what Search Engine Marketing really means. More than likely, you've heard the two terms used interchangeably and may think that they mean the same thing. Though they are similar, there is a dramatic difference between the two practices. Knowing and understanding the difference between these two terms, and more importantly, knowing how to take advantage of the differences is the key to overall success in marketing via search engines.
There has been a dramatic but subtle change over the past few years with regards to promoting websites via search engines. Rather than being two interchangeable terms, Search Engine Optimization is actually an element of Search Engine Marketing, with the other element being "Paid Search Media." It is those site owners and managers that truly understand this, and utilize it on their site along with all of the elements involved in each, that are achieving success on the search engines at a reasonable cost.
Let's define the terms before continuing.
- Search Engine Marketing: The act of marketing a web site via search engines, whether this is improving rank in organic listings, purchasing paid listings or a combination thereof, along with other search engine related activities. (Source:
SEMPO.org)
- Search Engine Optimization: The act of altering a web site so that is does well in the organic, crawler- based listings of search engines. Also called "SEO." (Source:
SEMPO.org)
- Paid Search Media: Advertising programs where listings are guaranteed to appear in response to particular search terms, with higher ranking typically obtained by paying more than other advertisers. Also called "Paid Placement," "Pay Per Click" and "Cost per Click." (Source:
SEMPO.org)

How to get more sales from your mail-outs!
On my travels as a business-by-phone trainer, I notice so much time and
energy (and money!) seems to be spent in providing prospects with
information. From my observations, not much time, energy or technique is
used to qualify the reasons why the prospect requests info in the first
place.
“Send me details?
seems to send reps and callers rushing off to the brochure pile, composing
letters and firing off emails. I watch as they open their sales diaries and
write “should buy?next to some unconfirmed, vague time to call back
next week.
Ask yourself this ?
how many sales do I get compared with how much I send out?
Before we go any
further, I agree it’s important to send new prospects literature that
backs up your call and details your product or service, but it’s equally
important, vital for constant successes, that you qualify their reasons and
“close?the info pack before you send out.
Golden Rule: Always make
a full presentation before you send out anything! (See back issues of
E-Phone Contact for reasons and answers.)
In the attachment along
with this special edition of E-Phone Contact, you will find a scripted,
proven response to the “send me information?request.
I have developed, used
and trained this technique very successfully to many business-by-phone
professionals, field sales reps and callers of all kinds. You may wish to
try it out yourself or circulate it to your staff. It really works!
May
all your sales targets be met.

Which part of your marketing is wasted? by John Shattock
By John Shattock, APR, FPRINZ
In this issue:
I know that half of my advertising is wasted, I just
don't know which half it is
John Wannamaker, the father of the modern department store, once said.
The famous saying could be just as valid today if it was
extended across all forms of marketing and communication. Of course, as John
said last century, the tricky bit is knowing which half is wasted.
Some might say wastage of only 50 per cent was being generous. Whatever the
proportion, knowing which parts are working and which are not, is
essential.
Yet many business owners seem to be willing to continue using marketing
strategies with absolutely no idea whether they are working.

Boosting word-of-mouth marketing by John Shattock
In this issue:
By John Shattock, APR, FPRINZ
When owners and managers of established service businesses
are asked how they generate most of their business, the response is
invariably "word of mouth". In many cases, they report as much as
60 per cent of new business is generated in this way.
Yet most have only a vague idea of how word-of-mouth works. Most think it is
just a matter of doing good work and providing excellent service.
Certainly those are essentials, but there’s much more to success than
that.

What is "organic" search and how can it help your company?
The first time I heard the term "organic search" I immediately
thought of organic food at the grocery store. So, is this organic search
healthier for me? Will it reduce my chances of getting cancer? Not only can
the search engines bring most of the world's knowledge to my desktop, but
now they can prevent deadly diseases too! Imagine my disappointment when I
learned organic search was simply the next new buzzword for the concept of
pure, or crawler-based search. As some of our readers may find it
challenging to keep up with all of the latest lingo, I thought I'd take a
moment to at least explain the concept of organic search.

How do we communicate?
Issue 7 Volume 3 June 2004
At the recent seminar on “What to tell your child about puberty??the
major questions that came up were
- How can we help our children deal with peer pressure?
- What are the skills we need to teach them?
I think if we really knew how to protect our children from the rigors of
life there would be no purpose for their existence. We are all here on our
own journey, whether we like the path it is taking or not. The fact is, we
cannot protect them, but we can guide them. The best way to do this is to
understand yourself and what makes you tick.

Why do people feel uncomfortable talking about their bodies?
Issue 6 Volume 3 May 2004
Recently there was a documentary on TVNZ titled “Flesh and the
Devil? Unfortunately, I think many people would have missed it, as the
time slot was 11pm on a Sunday night. It talked about celibacy and the
church, when it was introduced, why, and the results up to the present day.
Now I don’t need to tell anyone about the problems that have arisen
within the Catholic Church by a decree that controlling the desires of sex
was a way of self control, all in the name of giving thyself to God and
doing God's work. The problem with such a decree is that the desires of the
flesh are innate.

Navigating The Marketing Minefield
Preconceived Ideas = Expectations Met (or Not?)
Think about the last time you had an expectation of something, based on what
you had previously heard or seen, but not experienced yourself. Did the
reality of your own experience meet, exceed or not even come close to your
preconceived ideas about it beforehand?
Often we rely on others to tell us what to expect and that tends to bias our
own thinking. For example, today I had to enter the USA, via Los Angeles
airport, and I have to say it was a delightful experience as far as typical
customs, immigration and baggage collection goes. In fact, it was so smooth
and uneventful I think I’ll do it again someday. But as I wait for my
connecting flight, I recall thinking before I got here that it was likely to
be a very different experience, and fully expected to be hours clearing all
the usual check points.

Motivation by Joe Beattie
Here are some thoughts that have encouraged, enthused, excited and totally
confused me over the Christmas holiday time.
As we enter a new year we all realise that we have to do it better. If we
don't we:
May not get the opportunity again; We may lose all the impetus we have
created; We may lose all the credibility we have built; (worst of all)
We may disappoint the client. The client is the reason for our business
and we must never lose that focus.
The concerning thing is, many of us have to 'leave it to others' and, it is
their performance that builds our business. How many people do you meet in a
week that would cause you concern if they were building your company's
performance?
So often we leave it to the 'Mobile' or the 'Electronic' and in doing so we
leave the client a little 'shortchanged' Have a look at what follows and see
how it applies to you and your business.

Kick-start your marketing communication (part two)
By John Shattock, APR, FPRINZ
I said last month that now is the time to kick-start the year with a
different approach to marketing, focusing on customers and their problems
instead of on you and your products or services. A customer focus means
there's no hype or hardsell to make you feel uncomfortable. It's also more
effective and profitable. This approach can be used in almost any business,
although it is most effective for services businesses and industry sectors
with a long sales cycle.

Dozens of factors figure into your prospects' final decision, whenever and

edge when you establish a personal connection. You must connect
emotionally and intellectually, so they like you and trust you . . . more
than your competitors. They're just like you; if you don't trust the
messenger, you don't trust the message.

Video Promotions News
Although the majority of projects we manage for clients are videos, we’re
often asked to either include these in PowerPoint presentations or create
the presentations themselves. In a Wired magazine editorial in September
titled "PowerPoint Is Evil," Edward R. Tufte, a Yale University
professor and author of graphic design book "Envisioning
Information", compared PowerPoint presentations to a school play:
"very loud, very slow, and very simple." He believes PowerPoint's
emphasis on format over content commercializes and trivializes
subjects.

Over the years, I've come to appreciate annual planning. We do ours in
January every year, with each component of our business setting objectives,
then bringing it all together and making sure things fit. During the year,
circumstances bring about some changed objectives, and rearranged
priorities.
Kinetics achieved a great deal last year, but some tasks proved bigger than
others, and some had pre-requisites that only became apparent as we moved
forward. This means that a number of objectives carry over into 2004. The
main thing is to have a direction, and to undertake positive projects in
order of benefit to the business.

Did you make New Year's Resolutions for 2004? Did you decide to join a gym

A New Year - New Beginnings
The wonderful thing about the beginning of year is the break that many of us
take at the end of the previous year. It is like the final act of the
play:
leaving us reflecting on ourselves and our life. We have all been
blessed
with this time out, a time to choose what we want to take into the New Year,
and what we want to discard.

LOOKING BACK.......What a year for New Zealand
investment!
A year when a residential property boom carried on far longer than we
expected, and we have to admit we got it wrong last year, as we thought
there would have been a crash long before now.
Since the last property crash of 1998 REINZ figures show that the average NZ
house price has boomed from $165,000 to $210,000, and according to the BNZ
Weekly Review, house rental yields are now down to well under 5.5% of house
value on average in Auckland, which means there could well be lots of
landlords wanting to capitalise on recent gains by selling, especially as
there seems to be a shortage of tenants.

Being a manager does not make you a leader
Often the terms manager and leader are used interchangeably, when in
practice this is not the reality. Whereas leadership is one of the
qualities managers must have, many managers do not possess the skills and

The Power of Fun by Joe Beattie
A three day conference in Christchurch recently opened my eyes to the fact
that we don't laugh enough. There was a ton of work done what with the
conference business; direction setting; planning; reviewing etc. There were
break-out meetings and time for discussion.
On the first day the conference I was fortunate enough to find myself

Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate.
He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say.
When someone asks him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were
any better, I would be twins". He was a natural
motivator. If an employee was having a bad day,
Michael was there telling the employee how to look
on the positive side of the situation. read on>

speaking with an English mother, Jenni Murray, who has written a book
“That’s my boy? In essence, what she says is that women

do anything and everything. But what has happened to men? Can
men not do everything too?

There's no Right or Wrong
by Joe Beattie Performance Coach
Working with an ex colleague at a conference recently I was reminded of
something that had slipped to the back of my mind. (Not difficult some may
say) When confronted, as we so often are, with something that causes us to
pull up short and wonder, "what's going on here?" how do we
react? Due to the way we work, think and perform we tend to think in
terms of 'right or wrong' Because most of us were brought up on a diet of
'right and wrong' by parents, school teachers and the like we tend to work
along and through this thought pattern.

There are plenty of manuals to
